Aromatherapy Massage

aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Massage is a professional massage using essential oils, which are derived from plants, trees, leaves and flowers to promote emotional and physical well being.

Historically, Aromatherapy has been used by ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans for many thousands of years. It was first used in massages in the 1950s by the Austrian-born cosmetologist Marguerite Maury. Her clients who were mainly wealthy women seeking rejuvenation, reported dramatic improvement in their skin condition as a result of her treatments. To their delight, there were also some interesting side-effects; many experienced relief from rheumatic pain, heightened sexual pleasure, deeper sleep, and a generally improved mental state.

There are many essential oils that can be used in an aromatherapy massage, which have special health giving qualities. Specific plants have different healing effects. Most oils are anti-bacterial and anti-septic, and some are anti-viral.

When these oils are massaged into the body, the smell and healing properties of the oils enter the blood stream and the limbic system to the brain to give a positive effect to our emotions and this results in an improvement in our emotional and physical well-being.

Before an aromatherapy massage we will discuss with you your medical history and lifestyle. This will enable me to choose the right mix of oils to suit your requirements. Some oils promote deep relaxation and will help you sleep whilst some can invigorate and stimulate you.

Some aromatherapy massage oils are especially good for use after exercise or sports to help the muscles get rid of the waste build-up and to prevent them becoming sore and stiff the next day.

There are many benefits to an aromatherapy massage, and many conditions can be treated. For instance Lavender oil is very good for lowering blood pressure, promoting deep relaxation and sleep. Lemongrass is good for stress, skin conditions such as fungal infections and muscle relaxation. Rosemary and Basil are good for memory, mental fatigue and Study. There are many more oils with their own very specific therapeutic qualities.

Whatever oils are used in the professional aromatherapy massage it will always be a pleasant, enjoyable and very relaxing experience.

I always try to use Aromatherapy oils in most of my massages as they are so good for you in many ways but it is OK if you don’t want me to use them. Some people have very sensitive skin so it is best not to use them. I normally use a base oil of either Grapeseed or Sunflower oil.
